Describe field of a solenoid

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 10)

Scenario

Junkyard mein badi machines bhari cars ko uthane ke liye ek metal ki cylinder use karti hain jo switch on karte hi giant magnet ban jati hai.

Ek saadharan wire ka coil itna powerful magnet kaise ban jata hai?

Mental model

Solenoid bahut saare chote-chote circular loops ka ek lamba stack hai, jo milkar ek traditional bar magnet jaisa shape aur power bana lete hain.

Ek long wire ko jab spring (cylinder) jaisa lapeta jata hai, toh use solenoid kehte hain. Jab usme current dalo, toh har turn ki field ek doosre ko support karti hai, aur pura setup ek normal bar magnet (jisme North aur South poles hote hain) ki tarah behave karta hai.

Explanation

Ek solenoid ek insulated copper wire ki long coil hoti hai jisme bahut saare close circular turns hote hain (bilkul ek cylinder ki shape mein). Jab hum solenoid mein current pass karte hain, toh woh bar magnet jaisi field lines produce karta hai.

Solenoid ke bahar, field lines ka pattern bilkul ek bar magnet jaisa hota hai—lines North pole se nikalkar South pole ki taraf travel karti hain. Aap uske ends ki polarity clock-face rule se identify kar sakte hain.

Lekin sabse interesting part solenoid ke andar ka field hota hai. Solenoid ke andar magnetic field lines bilkul straight aur parallel hoti hain. Yeh indicate karta hai ki solenoid ke andar har point par magnetic field completely uniform (ek jaisa) aur kafi strong hota hai.

Is strong magnetic field ka istemaal hum soft iron jaise magnetic materials ko magnetize karne ke liye karte hain. Jab ek iron rod ko solenoid ke andar rakha jata hai, toh woh bahut strong magnet ban jata hai. Ise Electromagnet kehte hain. Electromagnets temporary magnets hote hain kyunki current off karte hi inki magnetism chali jati hai, isliye inka industry mein bahut heavy use hai.

Worked example

Problem: State the nature of the magnetic field inside a long straight solenoid carrying current.

  1. Solenoid ke andar sab turns ka force combine ho jata hai.
  2. Jab field lines straight aur parallel hon, uska matlab field har jagah ek barabar hai.

Answer: The magnetic field is uniform (same at all points) and consists of parallel straight lines.

Problem: What is the primary use of the strong uniform magnetic field produced inside a solenoid?

  1. Agar us uniform field mein koi iron rod rakh de toh wo easily magnetized ho jayegi.
  2. Is tareeke se banaye hue temporary magnet ko electromagnet kehte hain.

Answer: It is used to magnetize a piece of magnetic material, like soft iron, to form an electromagnet.

Questions & answers

Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines produced around a current-carrying solenoid. State two ways in which the strength of this magnetic field can be increased.

1. By increasing the amount of current passing through the solenoid. 2. By increasing the number of turns of wire in the coil.

Approach: Focus on the variables that directly affect magnetic field strength (current, turns, and adding an iron core).

How can you increase the magnetic field of a solenoid?

By increasing the current or the number of turns.

Approach: State the factors affecting the magnetic field strength of a solenoid.
