Explain role of a fuse

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 10)

Scenario

Ghar mein light chali gayi kyunki pados mein achanak voltage bahut badh gaya tha. Papa ne bola 'fuse ud gaya' (fuse blew).

Yeh chota sa fuse ud kar poore ghar ke TV aur fridge ko kaise bacha leta hai?

Mental model

Fuse ek sacrifice karne wala darbaan (bodyguard) hai jo jaise hi current dangerously high hota hai, khud pighal kar (melt hokar) rasta tod deta hai taaki andar ka equipment bach jaye.

Fuse bas ek low melting point wali patli taar hoti hai jo circuit ke shuru mein live wire ke saath series mein lagayi jati hai. Jaise hi rating se zyada current aata hai (overloading ya short-circuiting), taar garam hoke pighal jati hai aur electricity ka rasta band ho jata hai.

Explanation

Electric fuse domestic circuits ka sabse important safety device hai. Yeh heating effect of electric current (Joule's heating) ke principle par kaam karta hai.

Fuse ek aise metal ya alloy (like lead and tin) ka patla wire hota hai jiska melting point relatively kafi low hota hai. Ise hamesha LIVE wire ke saath series mein lagaya jata hai appliance ya ghar ke circuit se theek pehle.

Jab kisi reason (jaise short-circuiting jahan live aur neutral wire touch ho jayein, ya overloading jahan bahut saare heavy appliances ek sath chal gaye) se circuit mein current uski safe limit (rating, e.g., `5 A` ya `15 A`) se exceed kar jata hai, tab kya hota hai? Joule's law (`H = I^2 R t`) ke according bahut zyada heat produce hoti hai.

Heat badhne ki wajah se wo patli fuse wire fat-a-fat pighal (melt) jati hai. Uske melt hote hi electrical circuit break ho jata hai (khul jata hai). Isse aage current pass hona band ho jata hai, aur humara mehenga electrical appliance jalne se aur ghar mein aag lagne se bach jata hai. Aajkal modern circuits mein fuses ki jagah MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) bhi use hoti hain jo melt hone ke bajaye trip ho jati hain.

Worked example

Problem: Why is an electric fuse always connected in series with the live wire?

  1. Fuse ka kaam hai appliance tak current pahunchne se pehle usko check karna.
  2. Live wire voltage lekar aati hai. Agar fuse pighlega toh sidha live voltage aage jana cut ho jayega aur current zero ho jayega.

Answer: Connected in series so that all current passes through it. Placed on live wire so that breaking it cuts off the high voltage supply, rendering the appliance safe from shocks.

Problem: What happens when live and neutral wires come in direct contact due to damaged insulation?

  1. Jab live aur neutral direct judte hain toh resistance almost zero ho jata hai. Ise short-circuiting kehte hain.
  2. Kam resistance se current bahut zyada badh jata hai, jisse fuse udd jata hai.

Answer: This leads to a short-circuit. The resistance drops drastically, causing a massive current flow which produces a lot of heat, but the fuse melts and breaks the circuit to prevent fire.

Questions & answers

Explain the role of a fuse in a circuit.

A fuse protects electrical appliances from damage by stopping the flow of unduly high electric current. When the current exceeds the rated value, the Joule heating melts the fuse wire, breaking the circuit.

Approach: Mention the working principle and the result (melting and breaking the circuit).

How does a fuse protect an electrical appliance?

It melts due to Joule heating when excessive current flows, breaking the circuit.

Approach: Explain the heating effect of electric current (`H = I^2 R t`).
