Explain twinkling of stars

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 10)

Scenario

Raat mein aasmaan ki taraf dekhte ho toh taare jagmagate (twinkle) hue nazar aate hain, par planets wahi ke wahi constantly glow karte hain.

Sitaron ka yeh twinkling effect kahan se aata hai?

Mental model

Earth ka atmosphere aag ke upar ki garm hawa ki tarah hilta rehta hai, jisse stars ki light aati-jaati (flicker) hui dikhti hai.

Star ki light jab hamari aankh tak pahunchti hai, toh wo Earth ke continually changing atmospheric layers se guzarati hai. Kyunki atmosphere ki density badalti rehti hai, light ki path bhi shift hoti rehti hai, jisse star ki brightness fluctuation dikhti hai.

Explanation

Twinkling of stars basically atmospheric refraction ka ek direct nateeja hai. Stars earth se bahut hi zyada door hain, isliye wo humein ek point-sized source of light ki tarah lagte hain. Jab unse aati hui light Earth ke atmosphere mein enter karti hai, toh wo alag alag optical densities wali layers se hoke aati hai.

Atmosphere ki physical conditions kabhi stationary nahi hoti hain. Hawa ki alag alag layers lagataar ghoomti aur mix hoti rehti hain, jisse unka refractive index continually badalta rehta hai. Is wajah se, jo starlight aati hai, uski path lagaatar slightly shift hoti rehti hai.

Kyunki path shift hota hai, star ki apparent position bhi uski true position se thoda fluctuate karti rehti hai. Saath hi, jo amount of starlight hamari aankh mein enter karti hai, wo flickr karti hai—kabhi star thoda bright dikhta hai, toh kabhi dim. Isi fluctuation ko hum twinkling of stars kehte hain.

Planets ke sath aisa nahi hota kyunki wo Earth ke much closer hain aur point-sources ki jagah extended sources (collection of many point sources) maane jate hain. Ek hisse ki dimming dusre hisse ki brightening se cancel ho jati hai, jisse net twinkling effect zero ho jata hai.

Worked example

Problem: A student claims that stars twinkle because they are continuously creating and destroying energy in bursts. How would you correct them using physics?

  1. Stars ki apni light stable hoti hai, bursts nahi hote (on a short time scale).
  2. Twinkling ka actual reason hai light ka earth ke atmosphere se continuously refract hona aur fluctuate karna.

Answer: The twinkling is not due to the star itself changing energy, but due to atmospheric refraction causing the path of light to fluctuate before reaching our eyes.

Problem: If we view the stars from the surface of the Moon, will they twinkle? Give a reason.

  1. Moon ke paas apna koi atmosphere nahi hai.
  2. Agar atmosphere hi nahi hai, toh atmospheric refraction bhi nahi ho sakti, jisse light sidhe aayegi bina fluctuate hue.

Answer: No, they will not twinkle because the Moon has no atmosphere to cause continuous refraction of light.

Questions & answers

Why do stars twinkle whereas planets do not?

Stars are point sources of light located very far away; atmospheric refraction causes their apparent position and brightness to fluctuate, leading to twinkling. Planets are closer, acting as extended sources; fluctuations from different points cancel each other out, making their light appear steady.

Approach: Contrast the point-source nature of stars with the extended-source nature of planets, applying atmospheric refraction.

Explain how the continuous changing of the Earth's atmosphere affects starlight.

It causes the apparent position of the star to fluctuate and the amount of light entering the eye to vary, leading to twinkling.

Approach: Describe the effect of varying refractive indices in the atmosphere.
