Identify convex and concave lenses
Scenario
Aapne dadaji ka chashma touch kiya hai? Kuch glasses beech se mote lagte hain, aur kuch kinaro par mote hote hain.
Glass ke in alag-alag shapes ka light par kya asar padta hai?
Mental model
Convex = Beech se mota (converge karega). Concave = Beech se patla (diverge karega).
Lenses do transparent surfaces se bane hote hain. Agar lens beech mein mota (thick) aur edges par patla hai, toh woh convex hai. Agar beech mein patla (thin) aur edges par mota hai, toh concave hai.
Explanation
Lenses transparent glass ya plastic ke bane hote hain jo light ko refract karke image banate hain. Inke do main types hain: Convex aur Concave.
Convex Lens (Double Convex) beech se ubhra hua (bulging outwards) aur kinaro se patla hota hai. Jab parallel light rays convex lens se guzarati hain, toh yeh unhe mod kar ek point par mila deta hai. Isliye isko 'Converging Lens' bhi bolte hain. Magnifying glasses aur microscopes mein yahi lens use hota hai.
Concave Lens (Double Concave) beech se dhansa hua (curved inwards) aur kinaro par mota hota hai. Jab parallel rays isme se guzarati hain, toh yeh unhe faila deta hai, jaise ek fountain pani phekta hai. Isliye isko 'Diverging Lens' bolte hain. Jinko door ka nahi dikhta (myopia), unke chashme mein concave lens lagta hai.
Dhyan dene wali baat yeh hai ki mirrors aur lenses ke roles ulte hote hain. Mirrors mein Concave 'converging' tha, lekin lenses mein Convex 'converging' hai.
Worked example
Problem: A student uses a magnifying glass to read a book. Which type of lens is she using?
- Magnifying glass light ko ek point par focus karta hai aur image ko bada karta hai.
- Jo lens light ko converge karta hai wo convex hota hai.
Answer: Convex lens
Problem: If a beam of parallel rays passes through a lens and spreads outwards, identify the lens.
- Rays ko phailana (spreading out) diverging kehlata hai.
- Jo lens light ko diverge karta hai wo concave hota hai.
Answer: Concave lens
Key points
- Convex Lens: Thicker at the center. It converges light rays.
- Concave Lens: Thinner at the center. It diverges light rays.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up mirror and lens names: Concave mirror light ko milata (converge) hai, par Concave lens light ko failata (diverge) hai. Dono ek doosre ke opposite kaam karte hain, isme bohot confusion hoti hai.
Recall questions
- Which lens is thicker at the center and thinner at the edges?
- Which lens is known as a diverging lens?
- Which lens is thicker in the middle and thinner at the edges?
Questions & answers
Name the type of lens that can converge parallel beams of light to a single point.
Convex lens
Approach: Converging lens is convex.
A lens always forms a virtual, erect, and diminished image. Identify the lens.
Concave lens
Approach: Only a concave lens forms a diminished virtual image for all real object positions.
