Scenario

Aapki gadi 20 m/s par chal rahi hai. Brakes ki manual me likha hai ki wo -5 m/s² ka deceleration de sakti hai. Aapko calculate karna hai ki gadi rukne me kitne seconds legi.

Basic acceleration equation ka use karke time ya final velocity kaise nikalte hain?

Mental model

`a = (v - u) / t` ek master equation hai jisme `4` parts hain. Koi bhi `3` pata hon toh maths se chautha nikal ata hai.

Jab bhi velocity change hoti hai, wahan `4` characters hote hain: Start (`u`), End (`v`), Time (`t`), aur Change ka Rate (`a`). Equation ko idhar udhar shift karke (jaise `t` udhar bhej diya) aap kisi bhi missing character ko dhoondh sakte ho.

Explanation

Acceleration ka formula `a = (v - u) / t` kinematics ke sabse zaroori tools mein se ek hai. Board exams mein seedhe acceleration nikalne wale sawal kam aate hain; ulta woh aapse kisi dusri cheez (jaise time, initial velocity ya final velocity) ko nikalne ke liye bolte hain. Iske liye aapko algebraic rearrangement aana chahiye.

Values put karne se pehle sabse bada rule: question ki wording ko variables me decode karo. 'Starts from rest' ka seedha matlab hai `u = 0`. 'Comes to a stop' ya 'brakes are applied to stop' ka matlab hai `v = 0`. Ye hidden values pakadna bohot zaroori hai. Phir check karo units ko; agar velocity `km/h` mein hai aur time seconds mein, toh calculation se pehle `5/18` factor use karke velocity ko `m/s` mein badalna padega.

Agar aapko Time (`t`) nikalna hai, toh formula ban jayega `t = (v - u) / a`. Jab gadi brakes lagati hai to numerator aur denominator dono negative hote hain aur sign cancel ho jate hain (neeche worked example 2 mein isko solve karke dekho). Agar time negative aaye, toh pakka aapne `(v - u)` ko galti se `(u - v)` likh diya hai.

Agar aapko Final Velocity (`v`) nikalni hai, toh `t` ko udhar bhej kar `at` banate hain, phir `u` add karte hain:

v = u + at

Yeh technically Newton ki first equation of motion hai jo isi formula se derive hoti hai. Practice me ye sabse zyada use hone wala step hai.

Worked example

Problem: A motorcycle moving at `15 m/s` accelerates at `3 m/s^2` for `4 s`. What will be its final velocity?

  1. Acceleration formula (`a = (v - u) / t`) se `v` ko isolate karein. `v = u + at` ban jayega.
  2. BODMAS rule lagate hue pehle multiply karein.

Answer: `27 m/s`

Problem: A train travelling at `90 km/h` applies brakes to produce a retardation of `5 m/s^2`. Find the time it takes to come to a stop.

  1. Pehle `km/h` ko `m/s` mein convert karein. `u = 90 * (5/18)`.
  2. Comes to a stop matlab `v = 0`. Retardation matlab `a = -5 m/s^2`. Time nikalne ke liye `t = (v - u) / a` karein.
  3. Dono minus sign cancel ho jayenge.

Answer: `5 s`

We'll find time first (or use 3rd equation later). t = (0 - 25)/-0.5 = 50s. (Note: using equation 3 directly is better, but this teaches time finding).

Approach: First step is to extract hidden v=0 and convert u to 25 m/s. Understanding these variables correctly is the core application here.

An object starts from rest and travels with a uniform acceleration of 4 m/s^2. How much time will it take to reach a speed of 36 m/s?

Approach: u = 0, a = 4, v = 36. Use formula t = (v - u)/a = (36 - 0) / 4 = 9.
