Define buoyant force

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 9)

Scenario

Agar aapne kabhi paani se bhari balti mein khali mug ulti karke dabane ki koshish ki hai, toh aapko feel hua hoga ki paani aapke hath ko wapas upar dhakel raha hai.

Yeh invisible force jo paani (ya koi fluid) laga raha hai, wo kahan se aaya?

Mental model

Fluid ka counter-attack: 'Mujhe mat dabao, main upar dhakelunga!'

Jab bhi aap kisi cheez ko paani ya kisi liquid me daalte hain, to liquid uss cheez par upar ki taraf (upward) ek force lagata hai. Is upward push ko hi buoyant force kehte hain.

Explanation

Aap jab swimming pool mein hote hain toh aapko apna vajan halka kyu lagta hai? Iska reason buoyancy hai. Har liquid ki ek property hoti hai ki jab usme koi object fully ya partially duboya jata hai, toh liquid uss object par upar ki direction mein ek force lagata hai.

Is up-thrust ya upward force ko 'Buoyant Force' kaha jata hai. Buoyant force ka concept sirf paani me nahi, balki kisi bhi fluid (liquids aur gases) mein lagta hai. Gas balloons hawa mein isliye udte hain kyunki hawa bhi upward buoyant force lagati hai.

Buoyant force ka basic reason pressure ka difference hota hai. Kisi object ko fluid mein daalne par uske bottom par jo liquid ka pressure hota hai, woh top ke pressure se zyada hota hai, jis wajah se overall ek net upward force generate ho jata hai.

Buoyant force ka magnitude is baat par depend karta hai ki fluid ki density kitni hai. Namkeen paani (salty water) ki density fresh water se zyada hoti hai, isliye ocean mein buoyant force zyada lagta hai, aur wahan tairna aasan ho jata hai.

Worked example

Problem: Why is it easier to lift a heavy stone while it is submerged under water compared to when it is in the air?

  1. Gravity pathar ko neeche ki taraf (wajan) kheench rahi hai.
  2. Lekin paani ek bada upward force (buoyant force) laga raha hai. Ye downward weight ko cancel out karta hai, jisse net apparent weight kam ho jata hai.

Answer: Because the water exerts an upward buoyant force on the stone, which reduces its apparent weight, making it easier to lift.

Problem: An object experiences an upward force of 10 N in fresh water. Will it experience the same force in highly salty sea water?

  1. Buoyant force liquid ki density par depend karta hai.
  2. Sea water mein salt dissolve hone ki wajah se uski density fresh water se zyada hoti hai. To buoyant force bhi badh jayega.

Answer: No, it will experience a greater buoyant force in sea water because sea water has a higher density than fresh water.

Questions & answers

What is the buoyant force?

The upward force exerted by a fluid (liquid or gas) on an object immersed in it is known as buoyant force or upthrust.

Approach: Directly state the definition emphasizing the 'upward' direction and 'exerted by fluid'.

Why does an iron nail sink while a cork floats?

Because the density of iron is more than water, so its weight exceeds buoyant force. Cork is less dense than water.

Approach: Compare densities and buoyant forces.
