Define thrust

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 9)

Scenario

Ek drawing pin ko board mein lagate waqt aap usko 90-degree sidha dabaate hain.

Force toh force hai, par hum specific angle par lagne wale force ko alag naam se kyun bulate hain?

Mental model

Thrust kuch aur nahi balki surface ke 'ekdum sidha' (perpendicular) lagne wala force hai.

Imagine karo force ko, lekin sirf usi direction mein jo kisi surface ke exact 90-degrees yani normal lag raha ho. Iss perpendicular force ko hi thrust kaha jata hai.

Explanation

Science mein force alag-alag angles se lag sakta hai. Agar aap kisi block ko ground par ghasit (drag) rahe hain, toh aapka force horizontal ya tircha hota hai.

Lekin aisi bohot situations hain jahan force exactly surface ke right angles par act karta hai. Example ke liye, jab aap apne thumb se pin ko notice board mein push karte hain, ya jab paani ka bottom apne bartan par neeche ki taraf force lagata hai, yeh sabhi force 90 degrees par hote hain.

Kisi bhi surface par perpendicular direction mein act karne wale force ko hum 'Thrust' kehte hain. Thrust aur kuch nahi balki force ka hi ek specific case hai. Kyunki yeh essentially force hi hai, iska SI unit bhi bilkul wahi hota hai jo force ka hota hai—Newton (N).

Thrust ka direct result hota hai surface par banne wala asar, jise hum aage chalkar pressure kehte hain. Par thrust sirf aur sirf overall downward force (ya perpendicular force) ka measure hai, area ka ispar koi effect nahi padta.

Worked example

Problem: A block of mass 10 kg is placed on a flat table. What is the thrust exerted by the block on the table? (Take g = 9.8 m/s^2)

  1. Table par rakhe block ka thrust uske apne weight ke barabar hota hai jo perfectly neeche (perpendicular) act kar raha hai.
  2. Weight ka formula W = m * g hota hai.

Answer: 98 N

Problem: Does the thrust change if the same block is made to stand on its smaller face instead of its larger face?

  1. Block ka mass change nahi hua hai, to uska gravity ka pull (weight) abhi bhi same rahega.
  2. Thrust sirf total perpendicular force hota hai, usko area (chota face ya bada face) se koi farq nahi padta.

Answer: No, the thrust remains the same because the weight of the block does not change.

Questions & answers

What is the difference between thrust and force?

Thrust is a special case of force; it is the force acting specifically perpendicular to a surface.

Approach: State that thrust is a subset of force defined by its 90-degree angle to the surface.

If a block exerts a force of 50 N on a table, what is the thrust?

50 N

Approach: Thrust is simply the perpendicular force exerted, which is 50 N.
