Identify action-reaction pairs

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 9)

Scenario

Ek table par book rakhi hai. Book gravity ki vajah se neeche dabaav banati hai, aur table usse upar ki taraf dhakelta hai, jisse book vahi tiki rahti hai.

Kya ye Gravity aur Normal force action-reaction pair hain, ya asli pair kuch aur hai?

Mental model

Asli action-reaction pair hamesha do objects ke beech hota hai: A pushes B, so B pushes A.

Ek action-reaction pair pehchanne ka sabse simple formula hai swap: Agar 'Object A apply force on Object B' hai, toh uska reaction hamesha 'Object B apply force on Object A' hona chahiye. Agar tum objects swap nahi kar pa rahe, toh woh pair nahi hai.

Explanation

Newton ka Third Law tab tak theek se samajh nahi aata jab tak tum real-world situations mein action aur reaction pairs ko identify karna nahi seekhte. Sabse badi confusion ye hoti hai ki students un forces ko action-reaction maan lete hain jo bas equal aur opposite dikhte hain, bhale hi woh ek hi object par lag rahe hon. Ek correct pair identify karne ka ek bohot simple golden rule hai.

Rule of Swapping: Agar 'Action' hai Force exerted by Object A on Object B. Toh 'Reaction' hamesha Force exerted by Object B on Object A hoga. Yahi strict symmetry har asali action-reaction pair follow karta hai.

Let's take the book on the table example. Book ka weight (gravity) neeche lag raha hai. Table normal force book par upar laga rahi hai. Kya yeh pair hai? Nahi. Dono force book par hi lag rahe hain, isliye yeh balanced forces hain. Asali third-law pairs do alag objects par hote hain.

Book wale case mein real pairs aise niklenge: Pehla pair: Earth gravity se book ko neeche kheench rahi hai (Action). Uska barabar reaction hai ki Book bhi Earth ko apne gravity se utni hi taqat se upar kheench rahi hai (Reaction). Doosra pair: Book table ko neeche push kar rahi hai (Action). Iska reaction hai ki Table book ko upar push kar rahi hai (Reaction - ye wahi normal force hai). Ye distinction dhyan rakhna physics problem solving mein bohot kaam aayega.

Worked example

Problem: A rocket pushes hot exhaust gases out of its nozzle downwards. Identify the action-reaction pair that causes the rocket to launch.

  1. Sabse pehle action ko 'A on B' format mein likho.
  2. Ab rule apply karke A aur B ko swap kar do reaction nikalne ke liye.

Answer: The action is the rocket pushing the hot gases downward. The reaction is the hot gases pushing the rocket upward, which provides the thrust to launch.

Problem: You hit a nail with a hammer. Identify the interacting objects and the action-reaction pair of forces.

  1. Yahan do main cheezein interact kar rahi hain: Hammer aur Nail.
  2. Hammer ne nail par force lagaya aage ki taraf.
  3. Third law se, object swap karo.

Answer: The objects are the hammer and the nail. The action is the force of the hammer on the nail. The reaction is the force of the nail on the hammer, which slows the hammer down.

Questions & answers

Identify the action and reaction forces when a person walks on the ground.

Action: The person pushes the ground backward with their foot. Reaction: The ground pushes the person's foot forward.

Approach: Use the A pushes B -> B pushes A format to clearly establish the interacting bodies.

When a gun fires a bullet, identify the action and reaction.

Action is force on bullet by gun. Reaction is force on gun by bullet.

Approach: Use the strict A pushes B, B pushes A format.
