Relate inertia to mass

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 9)

Scenario

Agar tumhare samne se ek tennis ball aa rahi ho toh tum use ek haath se aaram se rok lete ho. Par agar utni hi speed se ek bowling ball aaye, toh use rokna kafi mushkil aur dangerous ho sakta hai.

Dono balls same speed se aa rahi hain, toh bowling ball rokne mein zyada taqat kyun lagti hai?

Mental model

Jitna bhari object hoga, uski 'zidd' (inertia) utni hi zyada hogi.

Mass ek tareeke se object ki inertia ka measure hai. Heavier objects apna rasta ya speed jaldi nahi badalte, isliye unhe start karne ya stop karne ke liye zyada force ki zaroorat hoti hai. Lighter objects easily apna motion change kar lete hain.

Explanation

Humne padha ki inertia matter ki woh property hai jo change of state of motion ko resist karti hai. Lekin kya har object ka inertia same hota hai? Nahi. Ek empty cardboard box ko push karna bohot aasaan hai, lekin usi box ko agar kitabon se bhar diya jaye, toh use khiskana mushkil ho jata hai. Dono cases mein mass ka hi fark hai.

Physics mein hum kehte hain ki 'Mass is a measure of the inertia of a body'. Iska seedha matlab yeh hai ki jis object ka mass zyada hoga, uska inertia bhi zyada hoga. Agar 50 kg ka ek patthar rakha hai, toh uske paas 5 kg ke patthar se 10 guna zyada inertia hai. Isliye 50 kg ke patthar ko jagah se hilane mein tumhe zyada effort, yaani zyada unbalanced force lagana padega.

Yehi rule motion mein objects ke liye bhi apply hota hai. Agar ek choti cycle aur ek bada truck same speed se chal rahe hon, toh truck ko break laga kar rokna bohot zyada time aur force lega. Truck ka mass zyada hone ki wajah se, uski 'inertia of motion' bhi bohot zyada hoti hai. Woh itni aasaani se apni state change nahi karna chahta.

Isliye mass sirf yeh nahi batata ki object kitna bhari hai, balki yeh bhi batata hai ki uske motion ko change karna kitna mushkil hai. Heaviness and inertia essentially physical objects ke liye ek hi sikke ke do pehlu hain.

Worked example

Problem: Which of the following has more inertia: a rubber ball or a stone of the same size? Give a reason for your answer.

  1. Pehla step hai ye dekhna ki dono mein se mass kiska zyada hai. Stone zyada dense aur bhari hota hai rubber ball se.
  2. Kyunki mass inertia ka direct measure hai, jiski mass zyada hogi uska inertia bhi zyada hoga.

Answer: A stone of the same size has more inertia than a rubber ball because the stone has more mass. Mass is the measure of inertia.

Problem: A 5 kg block and a 50 kg block are both resting on ice. Which block requires a larger force to start moving it at the same acceleration, and why?

  1. Dono ko same acceleration chahiye, lekin 50 kg block ki zidd (inertia) zyada hai kyunki uska mass 10 guna zyada hai.
  2. Jiska inertia zyada hota hai, use apni state (rest se motion mein) change karne ke liye zyada force chahiye hota hai.

Answer: The 50 kg block requires a larger force to start moving because it has a greater mass, which means it has greater inertia and resists changes in motion more strongly.

Questions & answers

Which of the following has more inertia: (a) a rubber ball and a stone of the same size? (b) a bicycle and a train? (c) a five-rupee coin and a one-rupee coin?

(a) A stone, (b) A train, (c) A five-rupee coin. In all cases, the object with the larger mass has more inertia.

Approach: Identify which object in the pair has a greater mass. The one with the larger mass inherently possesses more inertia.

Why is it easier to push an empty shopping cart than a full one?

Because the full cart has more mass, hence more inertia.

Approach: Relate mass to inertia directly.
