Relate pitch to frequency

RoadmapsPhysics (Class 9)

Scenario

Chhote bacchon ki aawaz bahut patli (shrill) hoti hai, jabki ek adult aadmi ki aawaz bhaari (deep) hoti hai.

Aawaz ke is 'patle' aur 'bhaari' pan ko physics mein kya kehte hain aur yeh kis par depend karta hai?

Mental model

Zyaada frequency = patli aawaz (high pitch), Kam frequency = bhaari aawaz (low pitch).

Jab hamari vocal cords tezi se vibrate karti hain (high frequency), toh aawaz shrill ya high-pitched hoti hai. Agar vibrations slow hain (low frequency), toh aawaz deep ya low-pitched hoti hai.

Explanation

Hum jo sound sunte hain, uski ek property hoti hai **Pitch**. Pitch ka matlab hai ki ek sound dusre ke comparison mein kitni shrill (patli) ya flat (bhaari) lagti hai. Ye humare brain ka tarika hai sound ki frequency ko interpret karne ka.

Physics mein pitch seedhe tor par sound ki **frequency** par depend karti hai. Agar source of sound tezi se vibrate kar raha hai (yaani ek second mein zyada vibrations), toh uski frequency zyada hoti hai aur hum kahenge ki uski pitch high hai. Jaise ek flute (bansuri) ya kisi chidiya ki aawaz ki pitch high hoti hai.

Doosri taraf, agar source dheere vibrate kar raha hai, toh frequency kam hoti hai aur uski pitch bhi low hoti hai. Jaise ek dhak (drum) bajne par ya lion ki roar ki pitch low hoti hai.

Yaad rakhein, loudness aur pitch dono alag concepts hain. Ek patli aawaz dheemi (soft) ya tez (loud) dono ho sakti hai. Pitch sirf sound ke frequency nature ko define karti hai.

Worked example

Problem: Sound A has a frequency of 500 Hz and Sound B has a frequency of 1500 Hz. Which sound has a higher pitch?

  1. Pitch seedhe frequency ke directly proportional hoti hai.
  2. Kyunki Sound B ki frequency zyada hai, uski pitch bhi higher hogi.

Answer: Sound B has a higher pitch.

Problem: A singer is singing a note. She then tightens her vocal cords to vibrate them faster. What happens to the pitch of the note?

  1. Vocal cords tezi se vibrate kar rahi hain, jiska matlab hai ki frequency badh gayi hai.
  2. Frequency badhne par pitch bhi badh jati hai aur aawaz aur patli ho jati hai.

Answer: The pitch of the note increases.

Questions & answers

Which characteristic of the sound helps you to identify your friend by his voice while sitting with others in a dark room?

The pitch and quality (timbre) of the sound.

Approach: Mention the primary characteristics that make a voice unique: pitch (frequency) and timbre (waveform).

How does frequency affect the pitch of sound?

The higher the frequency of a sound, the higher its pitch.

Approach: Directly state the direct proportionality between pitch and frequency.
