Apply Right-Hand Thumb Rule
Scenario
Ek straight taar (wire) me battery jodte hi uske paas rakha compass deflect ho jata hai.
Hamein kaise pata chalega ki compass needle kis disha mein ghomega?
Mental model
Apne daahine haath (right hand) se taar ko pakadne ki acting karo: agar angutha (thumb) current ki direction mein hai, toh ungliyan (fingers) magnetic field ka ghera banayengi.
Jab ek straight wire mein current flow hota hai, toh uske aaspas ka magnetic field circles (concentric circles) ki form mein hota hai. Right-Hand Thumb rule ek simple trick hai in circles ki direction (clockwise ya anticlockwise) pata lagane ki.
Explanation
Right-Hand Thumb Rule bahut hi convenient tarika hai kisi current-carrying conductor ke aaspas magnetic field ki direction find out karne ka.
Imagine karo ki tumne ek straight current-carrying wire ko apne right hand mein pakda hua hai is tarah ki tumhara angutha (thumb) current ki direction mein point kar raha hai. Ab dekho tumhari ungliyan (fingers) us wire ke chaaron taraf kis direction mein curl kar rahi hain. Jis direction mein fingers lapet rahi hain, wahi magnetic field lines ki direction hogi.
Agar wire table par vertical hai aur current neeche se upar (upwards) ja raha hai, toh thumb upar rakhkar curl karne pe fingers anticlockwise ghoomti hain. Matlab field anticlockwise hai. Agar current upar se neeche (downwards) aa raha hai, toh thumb neeche hoga aur fingers clockwise wrap hongi.
Yeh rule yaad rakhna bahut zaroori hai kyunki aage aane wale circular loop aur solenoid ke concepts isi par based hain. Is rule ko Maxwell's corkscrew rule bhi kaha jata hai.
Worked example
Problem: A current flows vertically downwards in a straight wire. What is the direction of the magnetic field lines when viewed from above?
- Right hand nikalo aur apne thumb ko downwards point karo kyunki current neeche ja raha hai.
- Ab dekho tumhari ungliyan kis taraf curl kar rahi hain. Wo natural motion clockwise direction mein hoga.
Answer: Clockwise direction
Problem: An electron beam is moving from west to east. What is the direction of the magnetic field below the beam?
- Dhyan rahe, electrons agar west se east ja rahe hain, toh conventional current humesha opposite direction (east se west) flow hota hai.
- Apne right hand ka thumb east se west ki taraf point karo. Tumhari ungliyan beam ke oopar se aakar uske neeche south se north ki taraf jayengi.
Answer: Towards North
Key points
- Thumb direction: Must always point exactly in the direction of conventional current.
- Curled fingers direction: Gives the direction of the magnetic field lines around the conductor.
Common mistakes
- Using the left hand instead of the right: Exam mein stress ki wajah se bacche left hand se curl check karne lag jate hain jisse answer exact opposite aata hai. Hamesha confirm karo ki writing hand (agar right-handed ho) hi use kar rahe ho.
- Electron flow instead of conventional current: Agar question mein electron ya negative charge ka movement diya ho, toh current ki direction uske opposite leni chahiye pehle, uske baad rule apply karna chahiye.

Questions & answers
Apply Right-Hand Thumb Rule to find the direction of magnetic field inside and outside a circular loop of wire lying on a table, given current passes clockwise.
Using the rule on any part of the loop, the curled fingers will point downwards (into the table) inside the loop, and upwards (out of the table) outside the loop.
Approach: Take small straight segments of the loop and apply the rule individually.
A current flows vertically upwards. What is the direction of the magnetic field?
Anticlockwise
Approach: Point your right thumb up, your fingers curl in an anticlockwise direction.
